Kanazawa Japan, on the north coast of Honshu, has a long and complicated history, much of which can be read in its surviving historic buildings and monuments. It has been the centre of power of The Peasant’s Kingdom’ of the Ikko Buddhist sect; one of the largest cities during the Edo period, of which several streets remain, centred round its castle with samurai mansions and complexes, temple areas and merchants’ houses; and an army stronghold during the Meiji period.

Little of the original Kanazawa Castle survives: it. was badly damaged by fire in the 17th and 19th centuries. What remains is being restored. Ishikawa-mon is its old back gate. Its outer garden, Kenrokuen is widely considered to be among the top three in Japan. In the corner is the mid-19th-century Seisonkaku Villa, an elegant building with bright interior decoration. Less elegant, but equally popular with visitors, are the one-time geisha houses in Higashi.

Samurai were given estates according to their status and wealth, and a few of their houses remain in Kanazawa Japan city, as do some merchants’ houses, which are very long and narrow because they were taxed on their width, not their floor area.

Important monuments in the city of Kanazawa Japan include the Oyama Shrine, built in 1875. Its triple-storey Shinmon Gate is a harmonious mixture of Japanese and Dutch styles. Even the railway station has an amazing gateway. Teramachi and Utatsuyama are the temple districts. Myoryuji Temple, also known as the ninja dera, even though it is nothing to do with ninjas, has an astonishing number of hidden doors and secret passageways.
