The most recognizable landmark in Japan must surely be Mount Fuji. Situated about 100 km (60 mi) west of Tokyo, this almost perfect volcano is venerated by the Japanese, who know it as Fuji-san, their most sacred mountain. The last eruption was in 1707, but the volcano is dormant rather than extinct. In summer people like to be at the summit to see the dawn, and at night the light from their torches can look like a thin trail of lava on the mountainside.

The small town of Fuji-Yoshido is the traditional departure point for making the ascent of Mount Fuji Japan. Walking from here can take 11 or 12 hours before reaching the summit and the ascent is divided into recognized sections or ‘stations’. Usually people take the bus to Lake Kawaguchi fifth station, where the road comes to an end, and set off from there.

The main climbing season to Mount Fuji Japan is during July and August. At this time all the seventeen resting huts are operational, although if you want to stay the night you will have to make an advance booking. At other times of year it is still possible to make the ascent, but there are no guarantees that any of the huts will be open, let alone the post office at the summit from which it is traditional to send a card or two. The crater itself takes about an hour to walk around, and it is often extremely cold up there - An active stratovolcano Mount Fuji Japan is 3,776 m (12,340 ft) high, and the summit is snow covered between October and May.
