Aso National Park Japan. Almost in the centre of the island of Kyushu stands Mt Aso, not only the world’s largest caldera, but possibly the most beautiful as well. The mountain is a typical active, composite volcano, the circumference of its outer caldera being 128 km. It encloses seven towns and villages and five mountains, and some 75,000 people live here, their lives completely dominated by volcanic activity.

Apart from the peaks of Aso National Park Japan, the scenery within the caldera is of fertile fields and gently rolling, green meadows, grazed by cows and horses. The landscape of the foothills of Eboshi is particularly lovely, with shallow crater lakes peppering the plain. High in the crater wall to the north a huge outcrop, completely covered with greenery and known locally as the ‘Green Niagara’, can be seen.

Most visitors to the area of Aso National Park Japan come to see the active volcano within the caldera, Mt Nakadake, which last erupted during the 1990s. It frequently emits such strong sulfuric and other noxious gases that it has to be closed to visitors for a day or two, and those with respiratory problems are advised not to approach the rim of the crater. The top can be reached by cable-car, by road or on foot, and looking down through the belching, turbulent, sulphur-ridden smoke to the green-blue lake beneath is an awe-inspiring experience. Kusasenri is a round ash-covered plain, the result of an earlier eruption, next to Mt Nakadake.
