The Shimanami Kaido Japan (the highway above the sea) is a road connecting the prefectures of Hiroshima and Ehime, from Onomichi City to Imabari City, at either end of the Inland Sea. This has been achieved by the use of a series of seven bridges linking each of the six smaller islands that lie between Honshu and Shikoku. The route was opened in 1999, and the total length of the road is about 60 km (40 mi).

The Inland Sea is tranquil and beautiful and dotted with more than 600 islands. The viewing platforms on Omishima Island and Mt Hoko-san on Hakatajima Island afford probably the best views of sparkling blue water and picturesque islands.

Many of the islands are well worth a visit in Shimanami Kaido Japan, but Ikuchijima and Omishima are two of the most popular. Ikuchijima is an island of palm-fringed beaches and citrus groves and home to Kosanji, a brilliantly coloured temple complex modelled on famous temple buildings and is a big tourist draw. The island also houses the Hirayama Ikuo Museum of Art, with the works of one of Japan’s greatest contemporary artists. Conversely, Omishima’s main attraction is one of the oldest shrines in the country. Dedicated to the older brother of the Shinto goddess, Amaterasu, it was founded in the thirteenth century.

Each of the bridges along the route is unique. The Tatara Grand Bridge is the longest cable stayed bridge in the world, and Kurushima Bridge was the first of the three linked suspension bridges spanning the 4 km (2.5 mi) wide Kurushima Strait. Spend a few days cycling along the road and stop off at a few of the islands to enjoy the good beaches and lovely scenery of the Shimanami Kaido Japan.
